6 Things to Do With Your Senior Dog This Year

Happy New Year! Your canine buddy will stay right beside you as you ring in each new year. Of course, Fido’s needs will change as he ages. Older pooches often develop a charming demeanor that makes them wonderful pets and companions. If your pup is in his golden years, why not make some special resolutions just for him? Below, an Ellicott City, MD vet lists some things to do with your loyal pet this year.

Enjoy Relaxing Walks

When you walk a young dog, you may spend a lot of time and energy simply keeping Fido from chasing squirrels or the neighbor’s cat. Senior dogs, however, are much calmer. Instead of lunging or pulling, your loyal pet will plod along faithfully beside you. You may find that taking a slow walk with your furry best friend is one of the highlights of your day!

Visit The Vet

Just like people, dogs often need to see their doctors more often as they age. Regular exams are very important, as they increase the chances of any issues being caught early. It’s also important to keep up with Fido’s vaccinations and parasite control products. If you notice anything unusual that could be an indication of sickness, call your vet immediately.

Nap

Although Fluffy is the gold-medal napping champion among pets, Fido is no slouch in this department, either. Dogs get very sleepy as they grow older. Get your canine friend a comfy bed, and take time to just relax with him. (Note: orthopedic beds are great for senior pets, as they offer extra support.)

Take Photos

Senior dogs are super cute! Fido looks both adorable and distinguished with a grey muzzle. Take some great photos of your pooch in 2019!

Enjoy A Special Treat

Older dogs are very sweet and affectionate, which makes it almost impossible not to want to spoil them. Offer Fido healthy, high-quality snacks. Don’t go overboard, though: if your pup becomes obese, he could face some dangerous health problems!

Snuggle

All Fido really wants is to spend time with his human buddies. Treasure this special stage of your dog’s life. The time we have with our beloved pets often passes much too quickly.

As your Ellicott City, MD vet clinic, we are here to help! We look forward to providing your pets with great care in 2019 and beyond.
