Love Your Pet Day is coming up February 20th! Our animal friends truly do deserve to feel loved and safe every day. After all, they really enrich and complete our lives with their cuddles, playful antics, and unconditional friendship. Here, an Ellicott City, MD vet suggests some ways to make your pet feel extra loved on their special day.
Toys
Toys are always a great gift for our animal companions. Fido may like a new rope toy, while Fluffy may enjoy some catnip mice. If you have a bird, make Polly a hanging toy out of household items. You can use things like playing cards, plastic shower curtain rings, popsicle sticks, and bottlecaps. For pocket pets, like bunnies, hamsters, and Guinea pigs, use the tube from a toilet paper roll to make some chew toys.
Treats
If there’s one thing all of our animal companions get excited about, it’s treats. Of course, Fido would probably eat anything you put in front of him. However, stick to safe, healthy options, like some plain, cooked, boneless meat. As for Fluffy, a can of plain tuna in water is a good bet. Birds can have some safe fruits or veggies. Other pets all have their own unique needs, so ask your vet for specific recommendations.
New Beds
Beds are also pretty high on the list of little luxuries for our animal companions. You can get store-bought beds, or go the DIY route and make your own. Smaller pets may enjoy hidey-holes, hammocks, tents, or, in Polly’s case, perches.
Photos
Snap some charming photos of your pet. Don’t be afraid to experiment with safe props and/or camera filters!
Playtime
Pets are extra adorable when they’re being playful. Play sessions will benefit your pet both physically and mentally. Spend a few minutes playing with your animal companion. This will be fun for you, too!
Beauty Session
While some pets need more help in this area than others do, most animals will benefit from at least a good brushing. A good beauty session is a great way to pamper your pet.
Cuddles
At the end of the day, the best way to make your pet feel loved is to pay attention to them. Carve out some quality time with your furred or feathered friend!
