Fido’s Golden Years

Have you noticed grey on your dog’s muzzle lately? Is Fido starting to slow down? Our canine pals somehow manage to be just as cute as seniors as they are as puppies. However, you will want to make some changes to your dog’s care regimen as he ages. A local Ellicott City, MD vet offers some tips on how to do that below.

Exercise

Your pooch won’t be as active as he once was, but he’ll still need proper activity. Most pups need at least a daily walk. A good doggy workout will keep Fido’s bones and muscles strong, keep his heart healthy, and prevent his muscles from atrophying. You may also find that you really enjoy taking long, slow walks with your furry best friend. Just be careful not to overdo it!

Good Food

A proper diet is important to pets at any age! Of course, we can’t really mention food without discussing Fido’s love of treats. Treats are fine, but don’t go overboard. Your vet may also recommend certain supplements.

Comforts

Older dogs often get quite stiff and sore. A good bed is a definite must! There are few things cuter than a pooch dozing in his bed. We recommend orthopedic beds for older dogs. It’s important for your pup to be able to sleep comfortably! Fido may also appreciate having some elevated bowls to eat from. If your furry pal develops mobility issues, you may want to get him some pet ramps or stairs.

Temperature

Senior dogs are often quite sensitive to temperature extremes. You may need to put a jacket on your canine buddy when it’s cold out. Fido may also appreciate a heated bed or thermal blanket. In summer, make sure your pooch always has shade and fresh water.

Veterinary Care

Fido will benefit from more veterinary visits as he ages. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for signs of illness, such as lethargy, vomiting, restlessness, whining, and/or changes in eating habits, vocalizations, or behavior. Contact your vet if you notice anything amiss.

Tail Wags

Your pet will never outgrow his love of ear scritches, or his desire to just hang out with you. Spend lots of time with Fido, and enjoy this special time in his life.
