To-Do List For Adopting A Shelter Dog

It’s Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! If you’re ready to bring a new canine buddy into your home, please consider giving a shelter dog a second chance. Of course, adopting a new pet is a very big deal, so you’ll want to be sure that you have everything you’ll need ready and waiting for your furry pal. Read on as an Ellicott City, MD vet lists some things to do before the big day.

Shopping

A trip to the pet store is definitely in order! Your shopping list should include bedding, toys, treats, dishes, waste baggies, a tie-line, grooming supplies, and a leash and collar or harness. We also recommend getting your pooch a crate or carrier for travel. As for food, if you can find out what Fido has been eating, you’ll want to get that brand for now.

Petproofing

Man’s Best Friend certainly does have a knack for getting himself into trouble. Make sure that your home is safe for your canine companion! Toxic plants are one thing you’ll want to address. Check the ASPCA site here for a full list. You’ll also need to keep anything that could choke, entangle, or strangle Fido out of paws’ reach. That list includes things like plastic bags and ties; wires and cords; and small or sharp objects, such as keys, buttons, craft kit pieces, and coins. If you have a yard for your new pet to run and play in, make sure that the fencing is sturdy and secure.

Schedule A Veterinary Appointment

Fido will need to meet his new doctor ASAP. A full nose-to-tail exam is in order. You’ll also need to make sure your furry friend is current on vaccines and parasite control. If your pooch hasn’t been fixed and microchipped yet, you’ll want to get these things done or scheduled. This is a great time to ask your vet for advice on your pup’s specific care needs.

Research

Has it been a while since you’ve had a new dog? Is Fido a breed you’ve never owned before? Take time to do some research. This doesn’t have to be breed-specific, though. Even just getting some general information on dog care and adoption will be beneficial. There’s always more to learn about our canine friends!
